Things have really been hopping at the Shelter lately!
As many of you know, Have A Heart Pet Shelter is holding weekly low-cost spay and neuter clinics in our surgical suite. These clinics are supported by the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Fix the Future” initiative. The cost for the spay or neuter procedure and rabies vaccination is only $25! We have been performing between 30 and 40 surgeries each week. So if you have a dog or cat that has not yet been fixed, please call us at 870/449-7387 (Tuesday through Saturday, 9-3) and get on our waiting list so we can get it scheduled. Pets are dropped off at the Shelter in the morning and picked up later that afternoon. We need everyone’s help to try to get the overpopulation of unwanted pets in our area under control!
Another program provided by Have A Heart is a bi-weekly Puppy Transport. We work with several puppy rescues to get unwanted litters of puppies to other states where they will have a better chance of finding homes. The Shelter provides vaccines and transportation for anywhere from 15 to 40 puppies every two weeks.
Recently, the Illinois puppy rescue van hit a deer on the way to Arkansas and the transport was going to be canceled. That would mean not only our puppies would have nowhere to go, but also the puppies from several other area rescues and animal control departments. Our president, Linda Vincent, got busy contacting the puppy rescue and the other organizations. She arranged to transport ALL 52 puppies and a momma dog to southern Illinois where the puppy rescue is located. The Have A Heart van left Yellville at 9:20 in the morning with 23 puppies, Linda, and Leanne Mersman (another board member). They stopped in Ash Flat to pick up pups from four other organizations, made it to Illinois around 4 pm and got back to the Shelter at 11:30 that night, exhausted but happy. It was a whirlwind trip but more than worth it to get those puppies to an organization that can place them in safe, loving homes.
Our Dog of the Week is Cotton!
He and his buddies, Sonny and Duke, came to the Shelter from the same place through Animal Control. We think he is a little under a year old. Cotton is all white and has the most beautiful ice blue eyes. He’s currently 34 pounds and is pretty close to full grown. He appears to be a Husky mix so is a fairly high energy guy and will be happiest with a busy family, a running partner, or a dog sibling of similar energy! We haven’t seen him with smaller animals so don’t know how he would be with cats or small farm animals, but we do know he’s very friendly with people and has lived with other dogs.
Our Cat of the Week is Baby!
Baby is a two-year-old female Torbie (tortoiseshell tabby). She is very sweet and lovable. Her human Mom had to do rehab in a nursing home. They were hoping it would be temporary but it is permanent as she is unable to care for herself. A foster took in her two small dogs and cat. Her foster Mom discovered that Baby likes to drink running water from the bathroom sink.
Baby has grown up with two dachshund sisters and got along with multiple dogs in her foster home. She is now at the Shelter in hopes of finding her new furever home. She isn’t used to the other cats (yet) and appears to be more comfortable around dogs and people.
If you’d like to meet Cotton, Baby, or any of our other adoptables, give us a call at 870/449-7387 or stop by the Shelter at 657 Highway 202 West in Yellville during our normal business hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 am to 3 pm. We look forward to seeing you!
