Pets of the Week

Pets of the Week

It was another busy week (as usual) at Have a Heart. We had a couple of our pets adopted locally and also received word that two of our dogs who went on transport, Dos and Tres, were adopted in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, for every dog that gets adopted there seems to be two or three more to take their place. Have a Heart is in need of more volunteers. We have a small dedicated group that takes care of all our animals, but they are overwhelmed. If we do not get a few more reliable helpers, we will have no choice but to reduce the amount of pets we care for and cut the hours of operation. We get great support in the way of donations of food, cleaning supplies, beds and money, but we need more hands on help every day. Contact David, our volunteer coordinator, for more info on volunteering. Whether it’s one hour a day or one hour a week, we need your help.

Our featured dog for the week is a big, sweet Redbone Hound we named Chester.  Our first introduction to him was when a wonderful lady found him abandoned, starving, emaciated with pressure sores and loss of hair on June 7th.  We did not have any open kennels at the Shelter, so Yellville Animal Control agreed to hold him until we had an opening.  On June 16th, we were finally able to bring him in.  At intake he weighed 50 lbs after being fed for 9 days at animal control.  His food was continuously increased and he now weighs 56.6 lbs.  He has been given antibiotics and medicated baths to improve his skin condition.  Chester was found to be heartworm negative, was treated for fleas and ticks, given all his vaccines, and was neutered and microchipped since his arrival.  The first few days we noticed that he was a very good dog.  Come morning he is anxious to go out since he waits all night and keeps his kennel clean.  Chester walks well on a leash, likes to play with all the other dogs and all the volunteers.  Fast forward to one month later and he is beefed up, healthy with a great personality.  He is very talkative with the trademark hound howl. Chester is looking for his new home.  Somewhere that his people would be willing to devote some time to him, maybe even have his own kids to play with.  He is a really sweet dog who enjoys attention. Come by the Shelter to meet this sweet boy in person.

Our featured kitty this week is Licorice. This adorable little unique MANX kitten was found on highway 14 South at the Yellville City water pumping station. We estimate he was born mid-April. Licorice is a spunky, playful and curious little boy. He is also good at “hunting” plants so keep any dangerous or delicate ones in a safe place. You can meet Licorice in person at the Shelter or view him and our other adoptable pets at www.petfinder.com or on HAH’s website, www.haveaheartpetshelter.org . Have a Heart is located at 657 Highway 202 in Yellville. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 3 pm. Phone 870-449-7387.
